A travessia

Ao somdo mar e do vento

A deriva Porto Rico

Todo este ceu

Lembra-me um sonho lindo
Quase acabado
Lembra-me um céu aberto
Outro fechado
Estala-me a veia em sangue
Estrangulada
Estoira no peito um grito
À desfilada
Canta rouxinol canta
Não me dês penas
Cresce girassol cresce
Entre açucenas
Afaga-me o corpo todo
Se te pertenço
Rasga-me o ventre ardendo
Em fumos de incenso
Ai, como eu te quero
Ai, de madrugada
Ai, linda
Assim deitada
Ai, como eu te amo
Ai, tão sossegada
Ai, beijo-te o corpo
Ai, seara
Tão desejada

Na ponta do cabo

A chusma salve - se assim

Já anda a gente do mar
a fazer fardos e trouxas
arrombando porões
a roubar arcas e caixões
e abandonam as mulheres
os filhos desamparados
que choram muito assustados
sem outra consolação
que uns abraçados com outros
incham das águas aos poucos
dos tragos salgados da morte
imploram a Deus outra sorte
às arfadas
aos arrancos
em prantos
e às golfadas
e uns se afogam de vez
deixando-se ir ao fundo
e se entregam assim
ao sono mais profundo
outros gritam aos céus
pela absolvição
e se enforcam depois
com suas próprias mãos
perneando com a morte
as pernas descarnadas
feitas em rachas em lanhos
e tão estilhaçadas
que por esta parte em destroços
lhes vão caindo os tutanos dos ossos
e sem saberem nadar
sem a nau
sem tábua nem pau
vai o mundo adornar
cai ao mar
cai ao mar

Daquela assada do barco
constroem seu salvamento
amarrou-se a gente ao troço
p'la cintura p'lo pescoço
indo assim tão carregada
ferem com facas e lanças
as mulheres as crianças
que se aferram à jangada
mas rezam avé-marias
padre-nossos litanias
p'las almas dos mutilados
que p'ra ali são abandonados
às arfadas
em arrancos
em prantos
e às golfadas
cheio vai o batel
e quase a afundar
p'ra alijarem a carga
botam gente ao mar
engole uma vez de vinho
e da marmelada um bocado
o pobre de um marinheiro
mesmo antes de ser lançado
deixou-se então atirar
com os braços cruzados
e se ofereceu todo à morte
tão quieto e calado
e o piloto logo abençoou
os seus dois filhos
que ele próprio lançou
e sem saberem nadar
sem a nau
sem a tábua nem pau
vai o mundo a adornar
cai ao mar
cai ao mar

Pequena era a tua filha
e não a quiseram salvar
ficou ao colo da ama
no barco grande a afundar
suplicas da jangada
enfim
ergues teus braços de mãe
mas não te escuta ninguém
a chusma salva-se assim
Gaspar Ximenes
calado
não chores alto
cuidado
tu chora só no coração
ou também vais como o teu irmão
às arfadas
aos arrancos
em prantos
e às golfadas
passam dias a fio
à pura fome e sede

E há quem vá tragando urina
e morra do que bebe
outros da água salgada
falecem dos sentidos
gritando sempre por água
lançam-se ao mar ressequidos
vai-se o soldado e o china
não fica dor nem mágoa
botou-se Estêvão mulato
com a mesma sede de água
e na tarde daquela aridez
atirou-se o padre
e o piloto outra vez
e sem saberem nadar
sem a nau
sem tábua nem pau
vai o mundo a adornar

A tua presenca

Eu já nada sinto
e afinal
eu gosto de não sentir nada
sozinho na calma das horas passadas
tão só numa outra quietude
num sossego tão so' sossegado
e esquecido
eu me esqueça de mim
aos bocados
adormece-me um sono dormente
que aos poucos se apaga
um sonho qualquer
mas não me acordes
não mexas
não me embales sequer
eu quero estar mesmo como eu estou
quietamente
ausente
assim
a viagem que eu não vou
nunca chega até ao fim
é longe
longe
tão longe
que de repente tu chegas
tu brilhas e luzes
na cor das laranjas
tu coras e tinges
a mancha da marca
na alma da luz
da sombra que finges
e tu já não me largas
saudade
tu queres-me tanto
e se eu lembro
tu mexes comigo
tu andas cá dentro
à volta do meu coração
no meu pensamento
também
e por mais que eu não queira
tu queres-me bem
e desdobras os mundos em cores
e levas-me pela tua mão
cativando o meu corpo
a minha alma
a razão
só a tua presença
é que me inquieta
aquela outra ausência
dói
como um passado projecta
aquele futuro que se foi
p'ra longe
longe
tão longe
que nunca se acaba
esta inquietação
se evitas momentos
já quase finais
e ficas comigo
ainda e sempre
um pouco mais
tu nunca me deixas
saudade
tu nunca me deixas

E parecia aquele Tejo
este rio doirado
parecia até que tu vinhas
comigo a meu lado
ou seria das flores
e das matas cheirosas
das madressilvas dos frutos
das ervas babosas

E pareciam campinas
vales tão estendidos
pareciam mesmo os teus braços
que me abraçam cingidos
ou seria das silvas
do gengibre do benjoim
do cheiro daquela chuva
dos cacimbos enfim
porque haveria de ter
saudades tuas
ao longo de um claro rio
de água doce

E parecia verão
no imenso arvoredo
parecia até que dizias
qualquer coisa em segredo
ou seria dos dias
muito quedos
sem fim
das noites
muito melhor
assombradas
assim
porque haveria de ter
saudades tuas

Cheirava a oregãos, fetos, agriões, poejos, malvas, alecrim... alecrim..."

Todo este ceu

Na ponta do cabo

Translation: Pedro Sorodio

the throng is saved this way

The sea people already are
making packages and packets
bilging holds
stealing trunks and chests
as they leave their wives
their forlorn children
that cry frightened
without no other comfort
than holding each other
swelling because of the waters little by little
from the salted draughts of water
they beg God for another fortune
pitching
by fits and starts
in tears
and gushes
and some drown for good
letting go until reaching the bottom
and they ~deliver themselves
to the deepest sleep
others scream to the skies
for absolution
and hang themselves later
with their own hands
struggling with death
the flesh stripped off the legs
made in splits in wounds
and so shattered
that through this wrecked part
the bone marrow falls off
and not knowing how to swim
without a ship
without plank or wood
the world will hell over
falls to the sea
falls to the sea

From that mess of the boat
they build their rescue
everyone tied to the fragment
by the waist by the neck
going as loaded as that
they hurt with spears and knifes
the women and children
that grasp to the raft
but pray Hail Mary's
and the lord's prayer, litanies
for the souls of the mutilated
that are abandoned there
pitching
by fits and starts
in tears
and gushes
full is the skiff
and almost sinking
to jettison cargo
they throw people at sea
swallow some wine
and a bit of quince jam
a poor sailor
even before being thrown
let himself fall
with his arms cross
and he offered himself to death
so quiet and silent
and the pilot immediately blessed
his two children
that he threw himself
and not without how to swim
without a ship
without plank or wood
the world will hell over
falls to the sea
falls to the sea

Little was your daughter
and they did not want to save her
she stayed on her nanny's lap
sinking in the big ship
you beg from the raft
and finally
you rise your arms of a mother
but no one listens
the throng is saved this way
Gaspar Ximenes
quiet
don't cry so loud
be careful
cry only in your heart
or you will go like your brother
pitching
by fits and starts
in tears
and gushes
they spend days in a row
in pure hunger and thirst

And there are those who swallow urine
and die of what they drink
others from salted water
expire their senses
always screaming for water
they jump to sea parched
go the soldier and the chinaman
no pain or hurt is left behind
Estevão was put out tawny
with the same thirst for water
and in the afternoon of that dryness
jumped the priest
and the pilot again
and not knowing how to swim
without a ship
without plank or wood
the world will hell over
falls to the sea
falls to the sea

Note: Tragic Sea Story
"Loaded was the ship, because of greed in the bottom was it lying and thinking it would sink for being so open and torn, some started confessing concisely to some priests, without caution or order, that the confessor even silences the insane that screams his sins loud. And the sea people, by nature inhuman and misguided, boarded rafts that they built, stealing and destroying everything, and defending the ships from which they demanded, by the strength of the sword and shoves. The spectacle that day was the saddest and most shameful you could watch. And all that people holding to the reefs, the flooding-tide drowned them, as they screamed for those in the skiff and the rafts, calling many by their name, all night in a never-ending scream so loud it would penetrate the skies."

Your presence

No longer I feel
and after all
I like to feel nothing at all
alone in the calm of hours passed
so lonely in another quietness
in a calm so quiet
and forgotten
that I forget myself
by snatches
a dormant sleep falls asleep by me
that little by little fades away
any dream
but don't wake me up
don't move
don't even cradle me
I want to be just like I am
quietly
absent
like this
the voyage that I don't take
never comes to an end
it is far
far
so far away
that all of a sudden you arrive
you shine and lights
in the color of oranges
you blush and dye
the blot of the sign
in the soul of the light
of the shadow you pretend
and you won't let go of me
nostalgia (note: saudade untranslatable Portuguese word)
you want me so much
and if I remember
you move with me
you're inside
around my heart
in my mind
also
and even if I don't want it
you wish me well
and you unfold the world in colors
and take me by your hand
bewitching my body
my soul
my reason
only your presence
disturbs me
that other absence
hurts
like a past projects
that future already gone
far
far
so far away
that it never ends
this restlessness
if you avoid movements
already finals
and stay with me
still and forever
a little bit more
you never leave me
nostalgia*
you never leave me

Note: Tragic Sea Story
"Having entered in the mild calmness of that sick land that lies below the Tropic of Cancer, we slept under trees, lying in the woods, very absent and in a very quiet exhaustion. And while we were like this, a man came with four or five oranges and said 'Here is the fruit or our land' with which a new lamentation and weep. And it was then that we decided to leave this place where we had stayed all this long with very good shelter".

Alongside a calm, clear fresh water stream

It seemed like Tejo
this golden river
it even seemed you were coming
by my side
or would it be the flowers
and the scented woods
the woodbines of fruits
the aloe herbs

and seemed prairies
such stretched valleys
they seemed so much like your arms
that hold me encircled
or would it be the brambles
the ginger from the benzoin
the smell of the rain
and the fog
why should I
miss you
alongside a calm, clear
fresh water stream

And it seemed summer
in the immense grove of trees
it even seemed that you were saying
something in secret
or would it be the days
very still
without end
the nights
much better
haunted
if so
why should I
miss you
alongside a calm, clear
fresh water stream

Note: Tragic Sea Story
&"And he followed the entrance of the S. Lourenço's river, realizing that some Portuguese were searching for ivory in an up-river village. And he sailed, very quietly, between the shores filled with tall and thick trees that entangle their arms in fair leafage. And the woods of diverse colors smelled like tigers, ounces, lions, elephants and wild cats. The flowers in yellow clusters make a soft roar that overflows all three senses. It smelled like origan, watercress, pennyroyal, mallow, rosemary… rosemary…".
